This article is called “WHO WAS LILITH? WAS SHE REAL? Have you ever heard anyone say, “You can hear anything but that does not make it true? Now please understand the very first version off the Hebrew Scriptures (the Bible) was not written in English. got questions.com says ” Was Lilith Mentioned in the Bible? The entire doctrine of Lilith comes from mythology and lies.

Lilith does not appear as a named character in the Hebrew Bible or any other canonical biblical text. The only reference to her name comes from the Hebrew word לִילִית (lilit), which appears once in Isaiah 34:14. In this verse, the prophet describes the desolation of Edom, listing various night creatures and spirits, including lilit. The exact meaning of lilit is debated by scholars, with interpretations ranging from a night bird to a nocturnal monster Wikipedia.

Isaiah 34:14 (NRSV)

“There too lilit shall repose, and find a place to rest.”
Other translations render it as “night creature” or “screech owl” biblically-accurate.com+1. This passage has no connection to the Garden of Eden, Adam, or Eve, and does not describe Lilith as Adam’s first wife.

The Lilith Myth in Jewish Tradition

The popular story of Lilith as Adam’s rebellious first wife — created from the same clay as him, refusing to submit to him, and fleeing Eden — comes from medieval Jewish folklore and texts like the Alphabet of Ben Sira (8th–10th centuries CE), not from the Bible Wikipedia+1. This legend developed later, drawing on Mesopotamian demon lore, particularly the Akkadian lilītu spirits Wikipedia+1.

Summary

  • Biblical presence: Only in Isaiah 34:14 as a night creature, not as a named woman in creation or Eden.

  • Biblical connection to Adam/Eve: None — the “Lilith as first wife” narrative is a later myth.

  • Origin: Mesopotamian demon imagery, later absorbed into Jewish folklore and mysticism.

So, while the name “Lilith” appears in Scripture, she is not a woman named in the Bible in the way many assume. Her biblical mention is incidental, and her famous mythic role is entirely outside the canonical texts Wikipedia+2.

WIKIPEDIA SAYS, “Lilith (/ˈlɪlɪθ/; Hebrew: לִילִית, romanized: Līlīṯ; also spelled Lilit, Lilitu, or Lilis) is a feminine figure in Mesopotamian and Jewish mythology. Lilith does not appear in the Hebrew Bible or any other biblical source, although her name is derived from a single word in the Book of Isaiah, specifically the Hebrew word lilit appearing in Isaiah 34:14. The meaning of this word is debated by scholars[1] with interpretations ranging from a primordial she-demon[2][3] to a night bird[4]. Based on medieval Jewish folklore, Lilith is said to have fled from the Garden of Eden because she did not want to submit to Adam.”

LET ME GO FURTHER: FROM GOT QUESTIONS .COM

“There are legends that Adam had a wife before Eve who was named Lilith, but this is not found in the Bible. The legends vary significantly, but they all essentially agree that Lilith left Adam because she did not want to submit to him. According to the legends, Lilith was an evil, wicked woman who committed adultery with Satan and produced a race of evil creatures. None of this is true. There is no biblical basis whatsoever for these concepts. There is no one in the Bible named Lilith.

The passage most often pointed to as evidence for Lilith is Isaiah 34:14, which in the NRSV reads, “there too Lilith shall repose.” This is a poor translation. Every other major translation of the Bible reads something to the effect of “night creature” or “screech owl.” Even if “demon monster named Lilith” was the proper translation of the Hebrew word, Adam is nowhere even hinted at in this passage or it’s context. Whatever the Lilith was, it is not given any connection whatsoever to Adam or Creation.

Another commonly used support for Lilith is the differing Creation accounts in Genesis chapters 1-2. Some claim that the woman in Genesis 1 was Lilith, with the woman in Genesis 2 being Eve. This is completely ludicrous. Rather, Genesis chapter 2 is a “closer look” at the creation of Adam and Eve as recorded in Genesis chapter 1. The Bible specifically says that Adam and Eve were the first human beings ever created (Genesis 1:26-28; 2:18-25). This “Lilith” myth is popular in some radical feminist movements because Lilith is an example of a woman refusing to submit to male headship. While there are myths outside of the Word of God regarding Lilith, her complete absence from Scripture demonstrates that she is nothing more than a myth.”

I spent 5 long hard years in Bible College and graduated with degrees. The degrees are still in my closet where they have been since June of 1984. I take them out and dust them off occasionally. I joke and tell people the degrees only means that I have been awn educated idiot. But I do appreciate all that I have learned and studied over the years. From all of my extensive study, this is another one of those myths (and there has been many myths and made up stories).
